Use TheyWorkForYou for Parliament Facts

TheyWorkForYou is the popular website that makes the UK Parliament easy to understand — and follow.

Search everything said in Parliament since 1935

There are 650 MPs in Parliament

Parliament is split into the House of Commons, and the House of Lords. Members of Parliament (MPs) are in the Commons. You can see them all listed here. Click on any MP to see their title, voting records, and more.

There are 760 Lords

Meanwhile, in the House of Lords (same building, different room) are the unelected Lords, also known as Peers. Here's a list of Lords and again, you can click on any name to find out more about them.

Hansard is the written record of everything spoken

It's been officially published since 1909. We have the complete record since 1935 and it's all searchable. It makes for a fascinating archive. For example, here's Winston Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches" speech.

Your MP represents you

So, if you have a problem, or you'd like them to vote in a certain way, or you want to visit Big Ben — you can drop them a line. Only write to your own MP, though: a strict parliamentary protocol means they can only respond to their own constituents.

The Queen is part of Parliament

In fact, she's the 'head of state'. Her title is also the very longest one on TheyWorkForYou, so we often use it to check it won't break our design layouts. Generally the Queen makes one speech per year, in which she puts forward the Government's plans.

Certain words are not allowed in debates

Members of Parliament are not allowed to swear, or insult each other. A search for the phrase 'unparliamentary language' can be very entertaining.

Written Answers winkle out the truth

The government may not wish to reveal certain information, but if they're asked in a Written Question, they must. On TheyWorkForYou we let you vote on whether or not you think the Written Answer has actually answered the question.
