mySociety was founded on one seismic technological change: the arrival of the internet, bringing radical new possibilities to the ways in which we engage with democracy. Now we’re seeing a second upheaval, just as explosive: the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into all facets of society — including the way governments work.

mySociety addresses the challenges of democracy and technology with a human-centred approach. It is with this in mind that we provide both guidance to, and scrutiny of authorities navigating this new wave — always advocating for keeping the human in democracy.

We monitor the state’s use of AI; advise on and lobby for best practices; and conduct research to surface stats and facts around implementation.

At the same time we’ll help people understand how and where AI in government has affected their lives, providing the tools for you to uncover algorithmic decision-making  — and, crucially, push back where implementation is harmful.

On this page we will be aggregating everything we create around AI, including our own internal guidance, research papers, thought pieces and more. We’ll also gather videos, webinars and writing from our global network of civic tech practitioners.

What we’re doing around AI

The use of AI in government cuts across all mySociety’s work in climate, community, democracy and transparency. Discover how we monitor and push for best practice in government, what we advocate for, and how we support individuals and civil society groups

How we use AI

Like many civic tech organisations around the world, we are introducing AI into our own work, creating efficiencies and giving us the understanding that allows us to pass comment on how it is being used elsewhere. We deploy AI with due diligence and only when it is the best tool for the job.
