    Type of idea: New feature for an existing project

  2. Common Purpose Graduates

    Describe your idea:

    I would like to see who in govenment and public services have been on Graduate training courses with the pseudo-charity ‘Common Purpose’, and how much taxpayer money has been funnelled into their organisation.

    What problem does it solve?:

    This would solve the probem of the secrecy involved around how many expensive wreckers are in our country’s administration working ‘for the Common Good’.

  3. What information do they have on me

    Describe your idea:

    Database of information held by public bodies about individuals in national databases.

    For each database, there should be information about:
    * name and description of all the fields it contains, which ones are compulsory
    * organisation owning the data
    * organisation managing the database
    * organisations who can access the data
    * data retention rules
    * data integrity checks
    * available access statistics
    etc.

    The focus to be (initially) on national databases owned by public bodies holding personal data. Examples of databases to include are the ones highlighted by the FIPR/JRF report.

    This would require a lot of manual work, but it would make some information spread over TWFY and WDTK available in a much more usable format.

    What problem does it solve?:

    * Finding out what information about me can a public body access.

    * Finding out which public body owns what information enabling me to send a Subject Access Request to check the accuracy of the information.

    * Empowering individuals (small step towards equiveillance).

    * Campaigning tool.

  4. What offences are they?

    Describe your idea:

    Easily searchable database of offences, how they were introduced, by which department, etc.

    What problem does it solve?:

    It would help answer questions such as:

    * what are all the recordable offences?
    * what are all the criminal offences?
    * how many criminal sentences were introduced in 2008?
    * what are all the offences related to fishing?
    * what are all the offences related to any action or presence in Westminster square?
    etc.

  5. What’s the law

    Describe your idea:

    A better http://statutelaw.gov.uk/ that would be not only up-to-date but also look in the future.

    You look at an act and there’s a slider that let you display the act at any time from the moment it was just a bill, to when it became an act, to when SIs came into force, to the point in the future where it may incorporate tabled amendments.

    There are opportunities to extend this, such as a mash up with TWFY to find out what MPs and Lords said about a particular section of an act.

    What problem does it solve?:

    It currently requires a great deal of determination to figure out what is the law, how it came about and how it may change.

  6. Vote with your Mouse

    Describe your idea:

    People who are suffering from the banking crisis and credit recession should be able to register by constituency. Then their MP can be petitioned, based on the number and types of complaint. For MPs don’t need to respond to requests from outside their constituency.

    “Vote with your mouse” should have the possibility of people formulating their complaint such they can be grouped. By grouping cases, the law can be changed.

    What problem does it solve?:

    The financial cruelty, economic injustice and legal perversions that are going on “under the carpet”. Please note www.edm1297.info or our online petitions Stop the Cash Crumble and Financial Fairness, please!

    Type of idea: A campaign or PR drive

  7. SynopTate

    Describe your idea:

    Enables you to browse through the 000’s of government documents available online and get synopses as well as being able to annotate sections with others.

    Instead of reading through pages and pages of unintelligible jargon, stats and text heavy documents – you will be able to select relevant sections and get summaries of key points.

    You will also be able to combine information from many online government documents to create your own information booklet and share this with others.

    This may consist of key points about immigration, GDP of a certain area, health care and crime.

    Other people can annotate sections of the document to make it easier for people to understand what it means.

    What problem does it solve?:

    I do not want to browse through hundreds of pages of online documents all day and not understand what it is saying.

    I want to be able to select parts of the document, annotate it with others, get summaries and key points etc.

    This will make government information online more easier to read and understand.

    This will NOT be a version of wikipedia – but will use actual copies of the government documents as basis to annotate on and create synopses with.

    Sometimes the people that write and produce these documents forget that people do not have time to wade through all the unnecesary details. They just want the main key points and summary.

  8. How are we doing?

    Describe your idea:

    Isn’t the purpose of politics to make the world a better place? To support the needy? To foster education, the environment, good health, community, happiness, peace? So, how are we doing?

    There must be measures of happiness, fear/safety, financial security, sense of community, vitality & health – let’s bring them all together, and give a current and historic view of quality of life – which ultimately is what should be improved by Government.

    Before we can make the world a better place, we need to know where we are now, and over time, if Government is working, things will improve. How can we manage it, if we can’t measure it?

    What problem does it solve?:

    It will help provide direction to society and politics, a way of seeing whether we’re “getting there” where our destination is much further ahead than the next general election, and much more attuned to the hearts and minds of the people than some lofty political goal, because we’re taking stock FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE ELECTORATE.

  9. minutemaker / what did we decide ?

    Describe your idea:

    a system that minutes from meetings are added so that they can be searched by date, who was at the meeting, what was decided. what actions, who what where when how

    this could be integrated into the orgs website.

    What problem does it solve?:

    the problem this system solves is the fact that most minutes are typed up in a word document , I just tryed to find out when a decision was made for a organisation that I work with, I had to open up about 30 word documents and read them all. It took ages. The decision was VERY important and I needed to know how and who made it.

    the system would speed up information and would make the organisations that use it open,transparent and democratic

  10. Roadworks on FixMyStreet

    Describe your idea:

    Roadworks are a major cause of inconvenience, not only to motorists but also to local residents. Works that appear to go on forever, abandoned works, where the barriers have blown down, where materials have been dumped and abandoned, etc, etc. I know this because I run a project which gathers live roadworks from half of the local authorities in England & Wales – www.elgin.gov.uk. I would be interested in joining forces with FixMyStreet to enable people to contact the relevant organisation to fix roadworks that have gone wrong.

    What problem does it solve?:

    Empower users of FixMyStreet to alert the relevant local authority department and crucially the utility company and road contractor to roadworks that are unreasonable, abandoned or unsafe.

    We have a mechanisim (XML web service) which would be straightforward to implement to get roadworks into FixMyStreet. Please get in touch if you think this is a good idea.
