David joined mySociety in October 2017, to help us pursue commercial opportunities with councils and other partners — mySociety’s charitable work is, in part, supported by the revenue we gain from such activities.

So he’ll be helping the Community team find new homes for our FixMyStreet Pro service, and also finding opportunities through our services in the FOI and Democracy spheres.

David came to mySociety primed by over a decade with councils and the wider public sector. He’d been scoping and delivering hardware and software with a focus on accountability and transparency in our public authorities — allowing for the videoing of council meetings, for example — “but also,” he’s keen to point out, “improving the overall meeting experience for all”.

Prior to this, David had already accrued sales experience within the TV world, “doing interesting things like selling the Channel 4 brand into Europe, and working with creative companies at Carlton producing advertising campaigns”.

Located in Brighton, David has one overriding interest: “I have Level 1 football coaching qualification and coach my son’s football team. I’ve got Brighton & Hove Albion season tickets for me, my daughter and son”. Beyond that, he spends free time with his kids, renovating his house, and swimming “when I’m not playing football”.

And because mySociety team members tend to have an obsessive interest in all sides of the democratic process, it stands David in good stead that he has a Masters in Politics with History.
