Retraction

Describe your idea:

Provide a site that scores media outlets and individual journalists/bloggers on the accuracy of their articles over time. Based on factors such as retraction rates, resulting legal cases, etc. Scores could be broken down to include factors such as incorrect use of scientific and statistical evidence, unfounded celebrity gossip etc. Forwarding incorrect articles should affect a score as well.

What problem does it solve?:

This would provide the public with a method to determine how accurate sections of the media have been at reporting particular topics over time, and might act as the ‘take it with a pinch of salt’ scrutiny that is so often needed. Many journalists often have difficulty with understanding scientific or statistical data, resulting in many notable scare stories – a site that recorded and compared these situations over time might have an impact on the sensationalist manner in which many of these cases are treated.
