NearMyStreet

Describe your idea:

NearMyStreet would be a campaign and website which would provide a comprehensive data on the location of public services, government buildings and other infrastructure such as post offices, post boxes, council offices, recycling facilities, telephone boxes, job centres, driving test centres, sewage works, public halls, schools, hospitals, prisons etc. etc..

This project could be split into the following:

1. a PR promotion to encourage members of the public to submit geolocations (with openstreetmap?)

2. A campaign to get the government, councils and companies (such as BT, Royal Mail, power and water companies) to release their geolocation data.

3. Collate all the sources of data and release it in an API with a website and map.

What problem does it solve?:

Available data for locations of government buildings and public services is fragmented and incomplete, with large differences in content and presentation between each body currently providing information. For most people locating services is difficult and not straightforward.

NearMyStreet would allow members of the public to find services and locations quickly and easily. It would also save time and effort for everyone who is involved in research or creating mashups.

Mashups could link to public spending at each of the facilities, and other statistical data to show patterns in public services across the UK.
