New mySociety IRC channel

Where’s the hippest new place to hang out on the internet? MySpace? FaceBook? Of course not – it’s the new mySociety public IRC channel.

For those of you who do know what IRC is, the details are:

server: irc.mysociety.org
port: 6667
channel: #mschat

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, Internet Relay Chat is an venerable form of instant messaging that works by creating chat rooms in which lots of people can talk. You need to install an IRC program (client) on your computer, and then use the above details to connect to the right place. Take a look at these tutorials if you want more help.

  1. If the above seems like gobbledygook, then just go to mySociety chat. You can talk to us there directly from your browser, without having to set up any special “IRC program”.

  2. Re the death of Chris Lightfoot
I just wanted to pay tribute to Chris Lightfoot.

He was startlingly intelligent and a lovely man.
His ingenuity and skill provided democratic opportunities through e-sites.
He enabled greater access to information and petitioning for the benefit of others. These contributions should not go unstated.

I grieve the loss of his current contributions and of what he might have achieved.

Where will we be now and why did we not foresee this disaster?
Chris, you were a giant among men!

  3. Thanks Zola. We’ve not posted on the Internet about Chris yet, because of the wishes of his family. This will change soon. Meanwhile, thank you for your kind words.
