Road Safety R.I.P.

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006 by Chris Pomery

What NEED does this meet?

Every time I take a drive in the UK at some point I pass a few bunches of flowers by the roadside. These makeshift shrines always seem incredibly poignant to me, and not just because my own family lost someone forever because of a road accident. Every day in this country, on average, maybe 9 or 10 citizens are killed. Hundreds of thousands of families have been scarred by these losses over the years.

This website will act as a memorial for those individuals, perhaps as an aid to those who have lost someone through a road accident, but importantly it will use the collective data generated in a range of ways with the aim of improving road safety. If the site saves one life, it will be worth creating…

What is the APPROACH?

A road death, or a makeshift shrine, can be registered on the site and marked in its location (perhaps using Google maps). Site users associated with that accident will be able to record some basic details, perhaps upload a photo. The site will aggregate data based on key variables such as the road number, time of day, etc. Aggregated data will be packaged for third-party websites to use. It might even become the core of a road safety website in its own right.

What are the BENEFITS to people?

This website would feed data into other websites offering road travel-related data including road traffic information, petrol price comparisons and car pooling. It also has a geographical component that can link into locality-based websites, eg local government sites. The idea would be to deliver stats to people planning a journey by road in order to make them think a bit more about the risks inherent in driving and in the hope that it may influence/improve their driving behaviour a bit.

What is the COMPETITION?

No idea, sorry, I’m just thinking this as I go along…

What BUDGETS & LOGISTICS are required?

No idea, sorry, I’m just thinking this as I go along…

Roadpeace already has an internet memorial at http://www.roadpeace.org/internetmemorials/index.php and the charity behind it actively campaigns for road safety.

  2. ShaneMcC Says:

I think the linking it to a map idea is excellent. Visitors would soon see what are the dangerous roads and that may affect behaviour.

  3. Chris Pomery Says:

http://www.roadpeace.org/internetmemorials/index.php has no interactive element and no maps.

Imagine stats on road safety coming up on satnav systems, or reminding you when you pass individual memorials to drive carefully…imagine this tied in to future road pricing schemes…

Think of ways it could be used in schools to prmote road safety…

    Dear Chris

As soon as I saw the dreaded word ‘accident’, I could heard no further.

Most all Road Crashes/Collisions (RTC) are the cause as a result of someone breaking the law, and in so doing they have used their mode of transport as a lethal weapon to kill or maim an innocent person who is going about their daily life.

Drivers get tired very fast and tend to doze off when driving resulting in car mishaps, loss of life I have been using this marvellous safety device called no nap which does alert me when i am sleepy , the inexpensive device is very good for all teens who drive and can be bougtht at http://www.thenonap.com delivered to your address free of cost
